Understanding osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis. It happens when the cartilage that cushions the ends of the bones gradually wears down, which can lead to pain, stiffness and swelling.
It often affects the knees, hips, hands, shoulders and spine, and tends to become more common with age, previous injuries and extra body weight.
While worn cartilage does not grow back on its own, many people find that staying active and using non-surgical care may help them move more comfortably.

Common symptoms
- Joint pain that worsens with activity
- Stiffness in the morning or after rest
- Swelling around the joint
- Grinding or cracking sensations
- Reduced flexibility and range of motion
- Joint pain that changes with the weather or long days
Common causes
- Age-related wear of cartilage
- Previous joint injuries
- Extra body weight
- Repetitive stress from work or sports
- Family history
- Joint alignment problems
