Understanding scoliosis
Scoliosis is a sideways curve of the spine. It often develops in childhood or adolescence, but adults can also have scoliosis, sometimes related to wear and tear of the spine.
Many people with mild scoliosis have few symptoms. Others notice uneven shoulders or hips, muscle tension or back pain that gets worse with long periods of standing or sitting.
Chiropractic care does not straighten a curve, but it may help with comfort, flexibility and muscle balance as part of a broader plan. Significant or progressing curves should also be monitored by a specialist.

Common symptoms
- Uneven shoulders or shoulder blades
- One hip higher than the other
- Visible curve or rotation of the back
- Back pain or muscle tension, especially after long days
- Clothes that fit unevenly
- Fatigue in the back muscles
Common causes
- Idiopathic scoliosis (no known cause), most common in adolescents
- Degenerative changes of the spine in adults
- Differences present from birth
- Neuromuscular conditions
