Herniated Disc
Understanding herniated disc
Between the bones of your spine are soft, cushion-like discs. A herniated disc happens when part of the inner material pushes through the outer layer. A bulging disc is a similar, often milder change.
Sometimes a disc problem causes no symptoms. Other times it can press on nearby nerves and cause back or neck pain, or pain, tingling and numbness that travels into an arm or leg.
Many patients prefer to explore conservative, non-surgical options first. Our goal is to understand your condition and recommend a plan that fits your needs.

Common symptoms
- Low back or neck pain
- Pain that travels into the buttock, leg, shoulder or arm
- Tingling or numbness in an arm, hand, leg or foot
- Muscle weakness in the affected limb
- Pain that worsens with sitting, bending, lifting or coughing
- Stiffness and reduced range of motion
Common causes
- Age-related wear of the discs
- Lifting heavy objects with poor technique
- Repetitive bending or twisting
- Car accidents, falls or sports injuries
- Prolonged sitting and poor posture
- Extra body weight adding load to the spine
How we may help
How our non-surgical care may help
- Spinal decompression may help reduce pressure on the disc and nearby nerves
- Gentle chiropractic adjustments can support spinal motion and alignment
- Shockwave and laser therapy may help calm inflammation in surrounding tissues
- Physiotherapy and rehab exercises can help strengthen the muscles that support the spine
- Roller-table massage may help ease muscle tension and guarding
When to seek urgent care
- • Seek emergency care if you lose control of your bladder or bowels.
- • Seek emergency care if you have numbness in the groin or inner thighs.
- • Seek emergency care if weakness in an arm or leg is getting worse.
